'Work to be done' to ensure economic success

Many developed nations are looking at the New Zealand economy with envy, but steps need to be taken to ensure its growth is sustainable and will continue well into the future.

This is according to politician Tim Groser, who recently told an APEC Business Advisory Council meeting in Auckland that there are plenty of challenges on the horizon.

These exist in the economic, social and political agenda, he stressed, but authorities remain focused on what needs to be done to ensure future success.

"We have a clear plan for this small but successful country," he explained, adding that the country's Budget is expected to be back in surplus as early as next year.

Inflation is currently within the target range, while New Zealand has confirmed its position as one of the fastest growing developed countries.

Business confidence is presently at an all-time high, with 14 regions across New Zealand expanding. For 12 of these, growth is at a rate faster than any other time over the past ten years.

"Of course we want to improve on this performance. But all in all, you will find the mood here pretty optimistic," Mr Groser emphasised.

New Zealand's situation is not something that has arisen by chance - more than five years of work have been put in by the government to ensure the nation continues to thrive.

This will no doubt have benefited small business accounting in NZ, as firms take advantage from the strong economic backdrop the country has come to realise over recent years.

The global economy is generally in better shape than it was three or four years ago, Mr Groser suggested, and New Zealand is one of the countries that has come away relatively unscathed.

Some areas of fragility still exist in the world, including the problems some major developed economies such as Europe and the US are encountering.
