When you're hiring for a small business, the decisions you make are arguably more important than those made by bigger, more profitable corporations. After all, you've got a lot more on the line if this arrangement doesn't work out for whatever reason, as it isn't always possible to simply get rid of the bad egg and replace them through Human Resources.

Making sure you ask the right questions is an essential part of ensuring you find the right fit for your business. Here are some examples that can help you narrow down your selection.

Do you have any previous experience in this field?

Depending on the job description the applicant is being interviewed for, this question could lead into a number of different topics. For example, if you're looking for a new bookkeeper to keep track of your small business accounting, it could be worth asking about previous experiences with financial systems.

Furthermore, gauging their level of understanding in the role, with regards to your business, could also be helpful. While they may have a degree in something, ensuring they're practicality in the role is another thing entirely.

Why are you leaving your previous employment?

This gives them an opportunity to be frank about their previous jobs. After all, if it was an abrupt termination, this will be verified when you check their references. However, giving them a chance to explain themselves is a great way to see how they handled the situation.

If they left on good terms, ask what they've been doing since then. Some people like to take time off working and travel, which can introduce a degree of worldliness to your workforce. This can also apply to people who return to tertiary education in order to either finish their degree of seek higher levels of education - both of which can be beneficial to your business.
