The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment today released its monthly Job Vacancies report for June.

Measured by monitoring online vacancies advertised on Seek, TradeMe Jobs, and the Education Gazette, the report found that job vacancies increased by 1.2% in June. This is in line with seasonally adjusted data which showed job vacancies had increased by 13.5% over the past year.

All regions and skill levels saw increases, with the greatest rise in demand for workers recorded in Bay of Plenty.

While the biggest increase by industry was hospitality and tourism – up 3.2% – all industry groups saw an increase in vacancies, except healthcare which recorded no change.

Vacancies increased in all the report’s monitored occupation groups, with the biggest jump for machinery drivers and operators, which were up 2.8% in June. Over the past year the largest occupation group vacancy increase was for labourers – up 31%.

The fastest growing occupation in the year to June was air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, which had a 116% increase in vacancies listed. Second fastest was clerical and office support workers, up 103%.

There were some losers though. The slowest growing occupations were surveyors, with vacancies down 66% over the past year, and bank workers – which saw a drop in vacancies of 53%.
