Building relationships is important both personally and professionally. In business, it can be just as important as the product or service you offer. Personal connections and great customer service will lead to positive word of mouth, increased sales and extended connections. A solid relationship does not happen overnight, it requires time, integrity, tact and more importantly, maintenance. An old mentor once told me, what can take years to build can be lost in a second.
See your customers as people, not numbers
In order to see figures, you must build trust with those who can help you achieve them. Your product is only useful if you know what your customers and clients want and need. When you strengthen your relationships, customers will be more open to communication and honest feedback. Your relationship with your clients will be dependent on the nature of your business, client type and individual client’s personality.
Communicate
Efficient communication should be seen as a priority. Let your customers / clients know that you are available for contact and reply promptly to any enquiries. Regular updates on project progress will iron out any problems as they arise. Your clients will also feel more confident and relaxed knowing that they are in control.
Keep in regular contact with old clients so you remain current in their thoughts – their networks may ask them for recommendations. When you attend networking events, follow up with an email letting the person know it was great meeting them. It is important to reinforce who you are, what you do and the connection you have made.
Be honest
Do not promise what you can’t deliver. It will not take long before your misrepresentation of a product or service will come to light. Be honest and realistic about what your business can and cannot provide. Customers will appreciate this and you will not be setting yourself up for failure.
If you are working on a project for a client, it is important to offer your honest opinion for what is right by the client. Do not remain agreeable to avoid confrontation. Your client is seeking your expertise and remaining agreeable will be counterproductive.
Maintain a positive attitude
It is important to exude the energy and confidence that you want your clients to feel about your work. Enthusiasm is an attractive energy trait that people enjoy being around.
Share you networks
Your clients may commission a number of services. If you can link them up with your contacts, you will not only be seen as helpful but a valuable asset to all your connections. The networking will then be reciprocated and your services may be recommended.
